Word Of Mouth - Winter 2006/2007
Most of you are used to hearing as emphasize the need for regular appointments. We want to ensure that not only your teeth remain healthy, but your gums and your overall health as well. Oral bacteria has been known to enter the bloodstream. This is called bacteremia and it occurs when gums are wounded, breaking their protective seal that keeps bacteria out of the body. For this reason, it is very important that you let us know if you are a patient with a heart condition (including a murmur), who has had joint replacement surgery or joint resurfacing.
Antibiotics prior to dental treatments (including some injections, teeth cleaning, extractions, and various surgeries) can reduce the risk of infection at the compromised site. For example, infective endocarditis is a life-threatening infection of the valves or tissues of the heart. It is uncommon, but it occurs more often in people who have some heart conditions, and it has been linked to the presence of gum disease and with dental procedures that could involve bleeding. Patients who have undergone a joint replacement or resurfacing procedure within the past two years are at increased risk of infection. After two years, the hazards diminish, but you should still let us know so that we may evaluate your need for premedication.
Please keep us informed and updated about your medial history so that together we can develop your best treatment strategy.
